Adaptations
Each animal, wherever it lives, must meet challenges to survive.
In order to survive, animals need to find food and shelter, and escape from predators. How do animals survive in their environment?? How are they able to get food or protect themselves? Get ready to investigate some pretty amazing animals more closely to find out what makes them able to survive in their environments.

Anything that helps an organism survive in its environment is an ADAPTATION.
Adaptations can fit into 2 basic categories
1.Structural/Physical
2. Behaviour
Adaptations can fit into 2 basic categories
1.Structural/Physical
2. Behaviour
A structural adaptation involves some part of an animal's body, such as the size or shape of the teeth, the animal's body covering, or the way the animal moves. Examples include
Behaviour adaptations include actions that help an animal survive. Behaviour adaptations can be learned or instinctive (a behaviour an animal is born with).
- Teeth - since different animals eat different things, their teeth shape, structure and alignment all differ
- Body coverings - Hair, scales, spines, and feathers grow
from the skin. All of these parts help animals survive in their environments. - Movement - animals find food by moving from place to place using a variety of different body parts
Behaviour adaptations include actions that help an animal survive. Behaviour adaptations can be learned or instinctive (a behaviour an animal is born with).
- Social behaviour - some animals live by themselves, while others live in groups.
- Behaviour for protection - An animal's behaviour sometimes helps to protect them from other living things. For instance the Opossum plays dead. A rabbit freezes when it thinks it has been seen.
- better climate
- better food
- safe place to live
- safe place to raise young
- go back to the place they were born
individual Task 1
Research 5 animals (from around the world) that use migration as part of their survival strategies. Write a brief description about where they travel and why! Include at least one that migrates to Australia each year!

Now, investigate the adaptations of the New Zealand Fur Seal and The Australian Sea lion. The following websites may help you... Australian Sea lion: http://www.kidcyber.com.au/topics/sea-lion.htm http://australianmuseum.net.au/Australian-Sea-Lion/ http://www.environment.gov.au/cgi-bin/sprat/public/publicspecies.pl?taxon_id=22 New Zealand Fur Seals: http://www.doc.govt.nz/conservation/native-animals/marine-mammals/seals/nz-fur-seal/facts/ http://www.environment.gov.au/cgi-bin/sprat/public/publicspecies.pl?taxon_id=20 http://marineparks.dpaw.wa.gov.au/fun-facts/72-new-zealand-fur-seal.html Create 2 fact sheets to compare the Sea lion and Fur seal, using the headings Behavioral adaptations and Structural adaptations in a table. You need at least 8 adaptations for each column, and a small description of how each helps the two mammals survive. Underneath your table, in a small paragraph, explain whether migration is a part of each of these creatures lives. ***Submit your task into your group folder |
